Key West Lighthouse
The lighthouse opened in 1848 and is kept by a woman who was unheard of at that time. It served as a beacon for ships and mariners using the shipping lanes or coming into the port. Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse and visit the keeper’s quarters. The place has been refurbished with historic trapping and furniture to look like how it would have been back in the day.
Duval Street
Located near the southernmost point of the island, Duval Street is a historic place. Here you can see the Southernmost House in the country and the Oldest House in Key West. Spend the day traversing up and down the strip while enjoying the view. There are plenty of shopping centers and restaurants around the area to complete the trip.
Ernest Hemingway Home
Ernest Hemingway stayed in this home during the cold winters of Wyoming. He did some of his best writings and drafted many novels in this place together with his housecats. There is a pool on the property that used to be filled with saltwater from an underground pump. Now, it has been converted and filled with fresh water.
The Custom House
Built in 1891, the beautiful four-story red-brick building is home to Key West’s custom office. It features a Romanesque style architecture that is famous for government buildings even to this day. The property is now a museum dedicated to Key West’s history, showcasing notable people, art pieces, and the government.
Harry S. Truman Little White House
Truman’s white plantation-style property is a retreat home for his work and vacation. Everything looked and furnished the same as when it was still in use. The house has been used as Naval Command headquarters during World War II. It is now set up as a museum to Key West’s military history.
